The transformation of F permit to B permit

A foreigner temporarily admitted to Switzerland holds a Permit F. However, this situation is not very comfortable, as the possibility of the foreigner returning to their country of origin is reviewed every year.

Given this unstable situation, it is worth trying to obtain a residence permit, specifically Permit B. According to Article 84, Paragraph 5 of the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals, it is possible to apply for Permit B after 5 years of temporary admission in Switzerland.

This application will be reviewed based on several non-exhaustive criteria, including the foreigner's integration into Switzerland, their family situation, and the possibility of returning to their country of origin. Integration will be assessed based on the absence of criminal convictions, participation in the Swiss economy or education, and, for the French-speaking cantons, the individual's level of French (A1).

If the application involves a family, all adult members must individually meet the requirements. If any adult member does not meet the criteria, the application will be refused for the entire family. Therefore, the conditions for converting a Permit F to Permit B are quite strict.

The benefits of a Permit B are numerous. These include the ability to travel outside Switzerland without needing authorization from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), the possibility of returning to one’s country of origin, and the renewal of the permit based on the holder's situation rather than their country of origin, initially for one year, and then every two years.
